Most tourists will visit Mpumalanga to go on safari in Kruger National Park or one of the private game reserves that surround it. Despite an increasing number of alternative safari options across South Africa (such as Madikwe and Addo Elephant National Park), there's no getting away from the fact the Kruger still holds the title of best safari option in South Africa. There's an almost unlimited range of alternative ways to experience Kruger, from self-drive trips (we don't recommend this for safari novices because you'll miss most of the game!) along the network of tarred roads to staying at bush camps; from multi-day wilderness trails to five-star luxury camps.

If you have time, you should consider driving (rather than flying) to Kruger and take a few days to explore the unique and stunning Mpumalanga escarpment. Here the highveld rapidly drops a thousand metres to meet the lowveld providing excellent views, fly fishing, birding opportunities and some of best drives in South Africa.
