One of the best jobs in the world must be to be the Minister for Tourism of Kwazulu-Natal - it has so much potential as a destination - including stunning mountain scenery, Zulu culture, an all-year warm climate, game reserves and beaches - it should sell itself. And yet today it attracts relatively few international visitors. Interestingly current President Jacob Zuma held this position for a long time...

'KZN' has a long stretch of coastline from the developed (very popular with South Africans) south and Durban through to the more remote beaches and protected nature reserves in the north. We prefer the latter, especially Zinkwazi, Saint Lucia Wetland Park and Kosi Bay. Accompanied by an all-year-round warm (humid in the summer) climate and some great game reserves (even southern Kruger is not far away) this is a good alternative to the Cape for a beach holiday.

The Drakensberg Mountains makes it into our top five destinations in South Africa. If you like raw mountain vistas that stretch your eyes, plunging waterfalls, a cooler climate and superb hospitality then we suspect you'll agree. Chose between the sheer cliffs of the Northern Drakensberg and the more penetrable, historic Midlands.

For many visitors the Battlefields of Rorke’s Drift and Islandlwana are synonymous with their romantic childhood images of Africa. With the right guide to bring stories to life, they will not disappoint. But it's also worthwhile taking time to explore the rolling green hills of Zululand - where life hasn't changed much since those early battles between competing empires.
