‘KZN’ has a very long coastline of the best beaches and pristine coastal nature reserves in South Africa. A tropical climate almost guarantees warmth all year around, however humidity can be a problem in the summer.

In Durban the cultures of India, Zulu and British Settlers fuse (and occasionally bump) together. But despite excellent food, a decent seafront and a fondness for a party, it probably doesn’t justify a trip.

Rather head north to the excellent nearby beach and lagoon in the quaint village that is Zinkwazi. Bird watchers and beach bums alike will holiday in harmony with nature at the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park. Further north even still, a white beach, excellent snorkelling and fishing as well as the opportunity to see turtles emerge from the sea to lay their eggs awaits at Kosi Bay.

There are some nice beaches to the south of Durban, including at Port Edward and Margate, but the annual Christmas exodus of highvelders to these towns, nicknamed ‘Joburg-Upon-Sea’, has led to over-development and a distinctly Costa-Del-Sol feel about them.
