The Garden Route continues its long meander from the Western Cape up the south coast of South Africa. The scenery slowly changes to more rugged coastline with deep ravines, the flora takes on a more Mediterranean - or even sub-tropical - appearance as witnessed by the occasional troop of baboons. This is best seen around Tsitsikamma National Park. Addo Elephant National Park and Shamwari Game Reserve offer a excellent big game safari alternative if you don't have the time to make it up to Kruger.
The best beaches of the Eastern Cape are to be found on The Wild Coast. Long, deserted beaches framed by forested dunes and dramatic cliffs are common in highly recommended settlements such as Cintsa, Coffee Bay and Morgan's Bay. There are a number of superb coastal hikes where you can walk for days with only yourself and the crashing waves for company. This stretch of the Eastern Cape is very under developed and you definitely know you are in 'Africa' now.
Very few tourists make it inland to the central Eastern Cape region we call 'The Hinterland'. But, for us, Rhodes and Hogsback are real highlights. Both are situated in naturally stunning mountain surroundings and, as places to relax in a world where time moves slowly, can not be beaten.
